Roofs peel off from the edges so it is critical to hold them tight with the roof deck sealed on the outside we turn to flashing the edges with metal and membranes metal drip edge flashing. A critical component of step flashings along the run of the roof slope is a kick out flashing.
Roof flashing is a thin material usually galvanized steel that professional roofers use to direct water away from critical areas of the roof wherever the roof plane meets a vertical surface like a wall or a dormer. The flashing shall be a minimum of 4 inches 102 mm high and 4 inches 102 mm wide. This detail illustrates a method of flashing a ventilator on a sloped roof. At the end of the vertical sidewall the step flashing shall be turned out in a manner that directs water away from the wall and onto the roof and or gutter while this is a nice diagram of how these flashings work don t forget our 5 th design rule.
The bottom leg of the step flashing is placed over the roof drainage plane. The lower edge is hemmed for stiffness. The base flashing extends onto the roof a minimum of 4 and is soldered to the ventilator. The kick out flashing directs water away from the adjoining wall and ensures that the step flashing is not concentrating water on the surface of that wall.
